Dell was named because of the topography of the area (a country dell or secluded valley). It was a trading center for valley ranchers and a station on the Union Pacific Rail line. The first post office was established in 1890 with Elizabeth Dowling as postmaster.Dell is located in southwestern Montana, situated south of Dillon on I-15.
