Box Elder Montana

Located in: Central Montana

Box Elder was named for the box elder trees that line the bank of the creek nearby. The town serves as headquarters of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation. The Rocky Boy Indians came from Canada in the 1870s and were often called 'the landless Indians, because they were scattered over many parts of Montana. The first post office was established in 1889 with William McGraw as postmaster.
