The 2,346,000 acre Flathead National Forest is bordered by Canada to the north, Glacier National Park to the north and east, the Lolo National Forest to the south, the Kootenai National Forest to the west and the Lewis and Clark National Forest to the east. This Forest contains the 15,000 acre Jewel Basin Hiking Area, as well as the Great Bear, Mission Mountain and a portion of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Areas.

Big-game species found in the area include bear, elk, moose, big horn sheep, mule and whitetail deer and Rocky Mountain goat. Along the trails, naturalists and photographers can see a variety of songbirds, hawks, eagles and owls. In shaded groves, along quiet pools, and out on the windswept range, gophers, chipmunks, beaver, porcupine, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels and other animals can be watched and photographed.

Directions: The Flathead National Forest is located in northwestern Montana in the Rocky Mountain Province.
