Hellgate Canyon Trail begins on a level railroad grade. The majority of it climbs a mountain on a series of switch-backs through the Hellgate Canyon burn. It features views of the Clark Fork River and the Missoula Valley. Hellgate Canyon Nature Trail divides off from the Kim Williams Trail. It heads up to the top of Mount Sentinel and then on into Pattee Canyon. A great nature trail with an abundance of birds and wildlife. Mountain bikes are not allowed on this trail.

Equestrians can access the Hellgate Trail from the Kim Williams Trail or from the Crazy Canyon trailhead in Pattee Canyon. The trailhead has ample parking and turn-around room for horse trailers. It is a 2.6-mile ride or hike up Crazy Canyon Trail to the intersection with the Hellgate Trail.

Directions: The trail begins on the River Trail by the University. Up river about a mile, there's the Hellgate Canyon Trail sign. Here it climbs the north side of Mount Sentinel (the one with the M on its face). From the top climbers can make a loop hike by descending on the M trail back to the University and back to the river.
