In 1999, the Northwest Montana Historical Society renovated the 1894 Central School building - one of the first such buildings in the Flathead Valley and one of the a few lasting examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture which still retains its original appearance.

The Northwest Montana Heritage, Education, and Cultural Center uses the spaces in the restored Central School building for its galleries, activity rooms, administrative offices, and collection storage spaces. Gallery exhibits portray aspects of our region's heritage and history, and examine issues affecting it today. Public programs and special events sponsored by the Historical Society continue in the museum. The Center contains a cafe, public lecture and performance rooms for rent, a museum shop, conference rooms, and a reference library.

Programs of the NWMHS are designed to increase public understanding of historic preservation issues and techniques, and encourage the private collection of historical objects and information. Since its formation in 1992, programs have included Historic Homes tours, Neighborhood Walks, fund raising events, and annual participation in National Preservation Week.

Ongoing, now through June of 2006: Western Native American Culture Exhibit at the Museum at Central School. Opened in January 2005, this authentic collection of rare and diverse Native American artifacts reveals much about the Golden Age of the Indian from 1750 to 1875. The exhibit features tools and weapons of bone and stone, beaded items, clothing old and new of hide, trade cloth and muslin, toys of Indian children, and a full size Indian tipi. This is an Indian-based exhibit of unusual authenticity not to be missed.
