Nez Perce tribal members hold this memorial ceremony to honor all veterans of the battle at Canyon Creek between the Nez Perce and the U.S. Cavalry on September 13, 1876. The ceremony is usually held on the weekend around the 13th. This area is part of the National Nez Perce Historic Trail. Events include smoking of the peace pipe, color guard, rifle salute, tap and a rider-less horse ceremony. The riderless horses symbolize those on both sides who died during the battle. During the smoking of the pipes, it is asked that no taping or pictures be taken. It is believed that as the smoke rises to the clouds, this brings a healing to all warriors who have been involved in American battles.
