A gala Charles Kuralt Memorial Concert in celebration of Lewis & Clark's stop at what is now Twin Bridges is scheduled for August 7. Kuralt, the original anchor for CBS's acclaimed Sunday Morning, admired William Clark and Meriwether Lewis as the first American explorers. At the time of Kuralt's death in 1997, he left unfinished an epic poem about their expedition through the West.

The open air concert featuring the Calder Quartet will be held on the grounds of the Schoolhouse at the Bluebird Fishing Camp. Scheduled for Sunday evening at 5:30pm, those attending are urged to bring a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy an evening of classical music on the bluff above the Big Hole River.

The Calder Quartet has created a sensation with its stunning combination of traditional chamber music and the avant-garde. Nominated resident string quartet of Los Angeles by critics, the group has been praised for its accomplished and touching performance. The foursome has repeatedly appeared on NPR's Performance Today, WQXR in New York, and KMozart in Los Angeles. They were recently nominated by the L.A. Weekly for Outstanding Classical Music ensemble of 2004. The Quartet takes its name from the American sculptor and mobile artist, Alexander Calder. It has been said of Calder that his one aim was to create chords and cadences of unknown movements.

At this first ever concert on the banks of southwest Montana's Big Hole, the Calder will play three pieces. They include Smetana's Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, 'From My Life'; Griffes's 2 Sketches on Indian Themes for String Quartet; and Dvorak's Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, ' The American.'

The Schoolhouse was moved to its current site in 1987 as a personal library for Kuralt. He hired Ken Ryder Construction for the major restoration. Today the Schoolhouse is used as a Commons Room for guests of the fishing camp.

Tickets for the concert may be purchased by writing PO Box 1, Twin Bridges, MT 59754, Calling (406) 684-5837 or emailing info@bluebirdfishingcamp.com. Space is limited. Tickets are $10.
