Will the Sleeping Giant be able to catch even 40 winks between June 19 and 26th' Musikanten Montana, Kerry Krebill, director, is hosting Helena Choral Week 2005, and the hills will be alive, from dawn to well after dusk, with the sound of music.

Maestra Krebill, who moved to Helena from Washington DC in 2002 to take the position of Chorale Director with the Helena Symphony Orchestra, has kept her ties with the nation's capital, returning regularly to DC to rehearse and perform with her Maryland-based choral chamber ensemble Musikanten. Having made 13 European concert tours with these singers, she decided they were ready for a tour to -- Helena, Montana! Helena Choral Week was born in June of 2004.

Seventeen East Coast singers joined 33 local musicians for an intense week of rehearsals leading to a Saturday evening concert at the Helena Cathedral featuring one of the choral masterpieces of all time, the Swiss composer Frank Martin's 'Mass for double chorus a cappella.' In addition to this major work, composed in 1922 but not performed for 50 years, the choir sang one of Johannes Brahms' a cappella motets, the radiant Op. 29, No. 2, Schaffe in mir, Gott (Create in me a clean heart, 0 God), and Gregorio Allegri's mystical 'Miserere mei, Deus' (Ps. 51). Other works included a setting of Psalm 67 by the American renegade composer Charles Ives, a motet by Aaron Copland, and two short works by the ensemble's favorite Washington composer, the late Russell Woollen. The week was a smashing success and plans began immediately for Helena Choral Week 2005, to be held June 19-26.

In addition to the week's culminating Cathedral performance, Helena residents and visitors will have the opportunity to hear Musikanten Montana's guest artists in free lunchtime mini-concerts each day.

Soloist will teach classes in choral technique, sight-singing and private lessons will be available to the public. The repertoire for the final concert is to be announced.

Directions: Many of the events will be held at the The Myrna Loy which is conveniently located in downtown Helena. The Saturday evening concert is at Helena's glorious Neo-Gothic Cathedral. Daily classes are at St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral.
