What the Hay is organized by the Utica Rod and Gun Club and sponsored by local businesses and private individuals and is held in conjunction with the Utica Fair Day. This event features creative hay bale sculptures. Past displays have included a mechanized, musical Jack-in-the-Bale, and a brightly colored Cook-Hay Monster. 'What The Hay' is sponsored by the Utica Rod and Gun Club and is held in conjunction with the Utica Day Fair. Sunday morning you will find a steady stream of traffic starting as early as 9:00am. The judging begins at 10:00am. In 2002 over 5,000 Peoples Choice ballots were cast for the most popular entry. A panel of three judges tour and select the top ten places. The hay bale sculptures are displayed in fields between Hobson and Windham (Highways 239 and 541), with Utica being the halfway point. Titles of the bales are mounted next to each entry. There are two categories: adults and children aged 12 and under. The only rules are it must be made out of hay. Any one from anywhere is welcome to enter the contest; hay and a location can be provided. Entrees are free. 'What The Hay is a fun community event the whole family will enjoy. You will spend the day viewing creative hay bale sculptures and touring the small towns of Hobson, Utica, and Windham. The three communities combined boast a wide array of dining and social opportunities. Beginning in 1990 the event has grown from a handful of entries to over 50 entries. Numerous television spots and press articles in out-of-state newspapers and magazines such as People and Sunset have covered this curious event. Although local farmers and ranchers make up the majority of the sculptures, there have been entrants from all parts of Montana as well as California, New York, and Arizona. Sunday the awards ceremony is held at 6:00pm at the Oxen Yoke Inn in Utica. The People's Choice and the ten winners receive cash prizes, which have been donated by local businesses and community members. Children who submit an entry receive a 'What The Hay' t-shirt for their gallant effort. Tee shirts and caps are on sale year round. Join us Saturday for a barbecue starting at 6:00pm and lasting till the food is gone. Live music to dance to starting at 9:00pm, held outside the Oxen Yoke Inn.
