On Saturday, October 1, 2005, the Nez Perce National Historical Park, Bear Paw Battlefield and Lapwai Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10933 will commemorate the final battle with a traditional Pipe Ceremony. The commemoration will take place at the Bear Paw Battlefield and honors all those who fought and died in the Nez Perce War of 1877. The commemoration begins at approximately 10:00am with a traditional Pipe Ceremony and is open to the public. Please note that photographing or filming of the Pipe Ceremony is not allowed.
Directions: Bear Paw Battle Commemoration is held at the Bear Paw Battlefield, 16 miles south of Chinook on State Route 240. The Blaine County Museum (501 Indiana Street), the interim visitor center, is a good place to begin your visit. For additional information, call the battlefield Park Ranger at 406-357-3130.
