On June 23, 2005, the annual 1876 Grand Ball will be held in Hardin, Montana, commencing at the Big Horn County Fairgrounds at the end of South Center Avenue. The observers and participants are swept back in time by the authentic fashions, music, and dances of the late 1800's. At 7:45pm the Children's Garden Dancers will perform period dances directed by the Grand Ball Mistress, T.J. Wald. All period-dressed dance participants will gather in the Grand Ball Pavilion to honor General George Armstrong Custer and his wife Libby. The Grand March will start promptly at 8:15pm on the dance floor. Period music, provided by the James Family Fiddlers from Dillon, Montana, continues until 11:00pm. To capture the occasion, photographers are on location to take photographs upon request. The Hardin Area Rainbow Chapter for Girls sells refreshments of pie, lemonade, coffee, and ice water. Period dress is required of all dancing participants. A detailed list of the dress requirements and local costume outlets are available upon request or see the 1876 Grand Ball web page at www.grandball.org. Lessons for the 1800 dances are given the Wednesday night prior to the ball from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Tickets for the dance lessons are $5.00 per person at the door on the day of attendance. 1876 Grand Ball tickets are $15.00 per period-dressed participants. Tickets are available at the Hardin Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Office, located in the old Hardin Depot.
